SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Coming off of a hard fought match which resulted in a loss at home against No. 5 Lindsey Wilson, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team hit the road and bounced back to defeat Lawrence Technological University 1-0.
The matchup between these two teams was competitive throughout. At the 23:15 mark in the first half, the Cougars struck first. Junior Morgan Gibson was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty kick which was taken and converted by Junior Rachel Graver for the only score of the game.
Despite the 1-0 final score, the Cougars had plenty of opportunities to add to the score. MVNU controlled the total number of shot attempts in the contest with 17 compared to Lawrence Tech's five. Sophomore Amberly Knox led MVNU with four shot attempts. Caylee Rosa, Graver, and Alexa Skal each had two shot attempts for MVNU as well.
Madi Moore was credited with the shutout in goal for MVNU, making one save in the full 90 minutes of play.
Head Coach Daniel Seiffert was pleased with the team's victory, but also knows that there is room for improvement.
"I thought our team came out today and really put forth a good effort," stated Seiffert. "Our first 45 minutes were really strong, but we need to continue to put two good halves together. We have a quick turn around as we have another match tomorrow so we will now prepare for that."
MVNU will look to keep the momentum rolling and build off their first victory of the season tomorrow in their match against Point Park University at 4:00pm.
