MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Mount Vernon Nazarene University volleyball claimed the opening set over No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan, but the Wildcats responded to win the next three inside of Ariel Arena Saturday afternoon.
MVNU's attack struggled to get back on track following set one, in which it totaled 15 kills to just seven for the visiting Wildcats to win convincingly, 25-18.
No. 20 IWU responded however and changed the tide in set two, 25-18, with efficient hitting, blocking, and defending that seemed at times to fluster the Cougars.
The final two sets concluded with identical scores of 25-15 and 25-15 in favor of the Wildcats.
Tay Thomas led IWU with 15 kills on 29 total attacks for a 0.414 hitting percentage. MVNU was led offensively by 13 kills by Kristen Osborn.
The most noticeable statistical difference in the match was the total hitting errors, as MVNU had 29 to just 17 for the visiting side.
Senior libero Ashley Gingerich was a bright spot for the Cougars from the back row with her activity and quick reactions, totaling 36 digs in the contest to help set up the offense.
MVNU (9-5, 1-2 CL) will set out in its next contest to halt a three-match skid, when it travels to face Grace (7-5, 2-2 CL) on Wednesday, September 13 at 7 p.m.
