WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The host Grace College Lancers defended their home court in a matchup with the Mount Vernon Nazarene University volleyball team on Wednesday, claiming a 3-1 win.
The win for the Lancers over MVNU was their first since the 2014 season, when they prevailed 3-0 on October 28, 2014 at Winona Lake.
MVNU was hurt in this contest by inefficient hitting, finishing with a hitting percentage of just 0.095 as compared to a percentage of 0.235 for Grace.
The Lancers finished with a total of 54 kills on 50 assists, to 39 kills on 35 assists for the Cougars.
Sierra Smith led Grace with 13 putaways while Cayli Teel contributed 10. Alexa Hill was impressive as a setter, finishing with 49 assists for the Lancer cause.
MVNU's offense, despite not clicking on all cylinders, was led by junior Kristen Osborn with 12 kills. Freshman Mary Kate Harmody was effective as well with nine kills to just two errors for a 0.259 hitting percentage.
The Cougars will have the opportunity to regroup on Friday, Sept. 15, as they travel to face Spring Arbor (7-10, 1-4 CL) for a 7 p.m. match. The two sides have met previously this season on August 19 in the Concordia University Tournament, with Spring Arbor coming from two sets down to win in five.
