MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Connor Davis and Gerardo Rivas both scored for the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's soccer team in its Crossroads League opener against Marian, giving the Cougars a 2-0 result over Marian.
The game was played at nearby Mount Vernon High School, and the Cougars did not disappoint the MVNU faithful in attendance under the lights.
The opening half was played to a scoreless draw, with both teams having their few opportunities to capitalize go for naught.
The home side however came out in the second half seemingly with even more energy than in the first, putting early pressure on the Marian back line.
With 40:13 left in the game, Davis was able to provide what would prove to be the game winner. After a Rivas shot was blocked and unsuccessfully cleared by a Knight defender, the sophomore midfielder possessed on the left side and was able to creatively dribble by a few defenders before placing a shot off the far post and into the back of the net.
Davis' third goal of the season ignited the home crowd, and not soon after Rivas scored with 33:44 remaining on a corner from Davis. Rivas found himself in the right place at the right time in front of net when the ball dropped to him, and he made no mistake for his third score on the year, all off corner kicks.
Tim Kasparek nearly made the game 3-0 moments later with a laser-like attempt from about 40 yards out, but by then, MVNU had all it would need for its victory in the opening Crossroads League match.
Goalkeeper Adam Miller and the defensive unit were well-organized all night, turning back Marian's 10 shot attempts, six of which were on goal. MVNU totaled 12 attempts for the night, placing five on frame of net.
"We put together our first full 90 minute performance tonight," said Head Coach Zach Ganzberg. "We were high temp and flying from the kickoff. We're still a work in progress, but we're making some moves in the right direction."
MVNU (6-4-0, 1-0-0 CL) has now won its second consecutive game, and picks up the three points in the Crossroads League standings. The Cougars will next compete when it travels to face Taylor University (4-2-2, 0-1-0 CL) on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
