MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Mount Vernon Nazarene University Athletics was recently privileged to meet with members and staff of "The Community Experience," a new program of Goodwill Columbus.
Among other activities, the group toured the MVNU Campus and interacted with many Athletic Department staff and student-athletes.
The visit to the campus of MVNU was just one of many ways in which Goodwill Columbus is involved in the local community, and the new program is clearly making an immediate and positive impact on lives.
"We work with individuals who have a developmental disability, to introduce them to the community at large," stated Kurt Lofton, the Community Integration Specialist for Goodwill Columbus. "We are different from traditional adult day service programs as we are not facility based. Everyone in the group is picked up and dropped off at their homes by TCE staff. We volunteer in the community three days per week. The other two days of the week consist of a fun day and a community exploration day. The fun day can be a tour, a movie or other recreational activity. The community exploration days can range from looking for new places to volunteer, to finding new restaurants, museums, libraries, etc. in the participants' community."
MVNU Athletics thanks Goodwill Columbus for their work, and for taking the time to make what was a memorable visit to campus.
"What a great way to allow others to experience the blessing that we have daily to come and work at MVNU," said MVNU Coordinator of Athletic Department Development, Paul McNeal. "It was an honor as a department to allow others to be a part of what we sometimes take for granted."
