MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – After dropping set one to Saint Francis, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University volleyball team grabbed the momentum in set two, going on to win 3-1 by the score of 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-19.
Visiting Saint Francis appeared to be on its way to a 2-0 lead in the match, but MVNU erased a seven-point deficit to turn the tide and even it up at one set apiece.
Sets three and four were never really in doubt, as the hosts were able to keep their advantage throughout with quality play from the first serve.
Saint Francis had more kills (53) in the match than MVNU (44), but their 26 attack errors, 12 service errors, and the MVNU block were key factors in the outcome.
MVNU finished with ten blocks as a team, led by a solo block and four assists from Alyson Near.
With the win, MVNU (16-11, 4-7 CL) was able to get back on track in the Crossroads League with the win following a 3-0 loss to receiving votes Indiana Wesleyan.
The Cougars will look to continue their form from the last three sets when they travel to face Bethel (10-13, 3-7 CL) on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. MVNU defeated the Pilots in four sets on Aug. 30.
