Bio

Doug Sherer was tabbed as Mount Vernon Nazarene's first men's volleyball coach on February 26, 2019. Sherer led the program through its transitionary club sport season in 2019-20, and was at the helm when the sport transitioned to varsity status in 2020-21.

Throughout Sherer's first five seasons at MVNU he coached three players who received all freshman team, seven first team all conference players, three second team all conference players, one newcomer of the year all conference player, a WHAC Setter of the Year and 14 WHAC academic all conference student athletes. On top of this, Sherer himself is a five-time Champions of Character Coach and the 2023 WHAC Coach of the Year.

Sherer continued to take his team to new heights in 2023 as he guided it to a program best 19-8 record. With the success on the court, MVNU earned its first ever spot in the NAIA National poll and hosted the opening round of the WHAC Confernece Tournament for the first time in school history.

Sherer comes to MVNU with over 20 years of coaching experience, including four years as the head girls' volleyball coach at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. In those four seasons, Sherer amassed a record of 57-40. Sherer also spent one year on staff as a volunteer assistant and recruiting coordinator at Malone University under head coach Tanya Hockman.

The bulk of Sherer's coaching experience comes from his over 20 years as a Junior Olympic coach for players of all ages. Junior Olympic volleyball is a national development program aimed at helping players from ages 10 to 18 learn the game of volleyball.

In addition to this experience, Sherer has officiated for volleyball. He has six years of collegiate experience and 10 years as a USA Volleyball Regional Official. Sherer also played 10 years of men's volleyball in USA Volleyball at the AA/Open and A levels, competing in the 1988 AVP Beach Event and 1989 USA Indoor Nationals.

Sherer is a graduate of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Sherer is married to his wife Karrin, and has three children; daughters Erika and Kendra, and son Jake. Jake graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene.
