Hot Hitting Carries Softball to Game Two Win at Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Mount Vernon Nazarene Universitsoftball team (20-20, 13-17 CLtraveled to Goshen, Indiana to take on the Goshen College Maple Leafs (17-27, 11-19 CL) in a doubleheader conference matchup on Friday, April 17.  

In the first game, MVNU jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs to go up 2–0. Skylar Zimmerman started things off with a single down the left field line, followed by another single from Dakota Staffan to put two runners on base. Avery Miller then delivered a hit to center field that brought in the first run, and Kiera Mayer followed with a double down the right field line to drive in the second. 

Goshen answered with a run of its own, cutting the deficit to 2–1, but the score held steady through several innings. The game shifted in the bottom of the sixth, when the Maple Leafs used two hits and capitalized on an error to score twice and take the lead. Goshen held on from there to secure a 4–3 win. 

Bailey Sheets took the loss in the circle despite a strong performance, allowing just four hits while recording five strikeouts. 

In the second game, MVNU struck first with a run in the top of the opening inning, but Goshen quickly responded with two runs to take a 2–1 lead. MVNU evened the score in the second inning when Jesenia Montalvo singled, advanced around the bases, and came home on a single by Zimmerman to make it 2–2. 

The Lady Cougars came alive in the later innings. In the top of the fifth, Staffan blasted her ninth home run of the season, driving in two runs to give MVNU a 4–2 advantage. They continued to build momentum in the sixth inning, adding four runs on four hits to extend the lead to 8–3. 

MVNU wasn't finished yet. In the final inning, it tacked on three more runs on three hits, finishing the game with an impressive 19 hits and securing an 11–4 victory. 

Zhari Hill had a perfect game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI. Zimmerman, Staffan, and Montalvo also delivered strong performances, each going 3-for-3. 

 

What's Next  

MVNU Softball will continue its road stretch with a doubleheader at Bethel University on Saturday, April 18 in Mishawaka, Indiana at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
