Baseball Finishes Series at SAU with Split

JACKSON, Mich. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (16-15, 8-12 CL) concluded its series at Spring Arbor University (16-13, 11-9 CL) on Monday, March 30.

Armando Gonzalez tossed a gem in his start on the mound for MVNU in the 4-0 win. Gonzalez pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Gonzalez had six strikeouts in the win for MVNU. MVNU scored their first run of the day in the top of the fourth thanks to Kaid Carpenter's RBI double to center field. MVNU scored its final three runs of the day on a Brady Lester home run. The three-run blast was Lester's third of the season. Caden Conn picked up the save for MVNU. The sophomore pitched three scoreless innings. Conn allowed just three hits to go with his two strikeouts.

MVNU trailed 0-3 in the last game of the series, but a huge seventh inning gave the Cougars the lead. MVNU plated four runs in the inning. Kevin Inman scored Ryan Willoughby with an RBI single to left, and Jack Schreck would later hit a three-run homer to right center, putting MVNU up 4-3. SAU tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a home run, but Lester answered with his fourth blast of the year at the top of the eighth, giving MVNU a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the eighth SAU mounted a comeback. After a wild pitch and an error in the field, SAU scored the tying and game-winning runs, handing MVNU a 5-6 loss.

MVNU will begin its series with Marian University at Cougar Field on Friday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m.
