(RV) Marian Takes First Two Games of Series Against MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (16-17, 8-14 CL) opened its home series against (RV) Marian University (24-9, 17-5 CL) with a doubleheader at the Cougar Baseball Field on Friday, April 3.

Marian got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the top of the first and two more in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead. MVNU got its first runs of the day in the bottom of the second after Andrew Moffitt scored thanks to an RBI single from Carter Lapata. Lapata then came around to score after Brady Lester batted him in with a single to right field, cutting the Marian lead to 5-2. The Knights answered in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer and an RBI single, stretching the lead to 8-2. Marian added three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh, claiming a 13-3 victory in game one.

In game two, MVNU started strong by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Kaid Carpenter hit a double to centerfield that scored Lapata, and Carpenter later came home after a double to centerfield from Jack Schreck. Brennen Nichols capped off the big inning with an RBI-single to third that scored Schreck. Marian added a run in each of the third and fourth innings, cutting the MVNU lead to one. A huge six-run fifth inning that included three home runs gave Marian all momentum. MVNU fell in the end 4-12.

 

What's Next

MVNU returns to action on Saturday, April 4 at the Cougar Baseball Field. The Cougars will wrap up its series with Marian with another doubleheader. Game one begins at 11:00 a.m.
