MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's lacrosse team (8-3) hosted NCAA Division-II opponent Thomas More University (3-4) at CH4 Stadium on Wednesday, March 18.
It was senior day for the Cougars as they honored seniors Angelo Elia, Chandler Giauque, Caleb Darrell, Chase Lawler, and Alex Wolfe prior to the game. Dylan Haynes helped MVNU get off to a fast start as he scored three of MVNU's first four goals to put the team up 4-2 midway through the first 15 minutes of play. Thomas More tied the game at 4-4 with a goal with one second left on the clock in the first quarter. The Saints used the momentum from the late goal in the second quarter, outscoring MVNU 5-2 to take a 9-6 advantage heading into halftime.
Thomas More began to create more separation in the third quarter. MVNU trailed 9-10, but the Saints scored the last five goals of the period to take a 15-9 lead heading into the fourth. While MVNU did outscore the Saints 6-5 in the final quarter, it would fall by a score of 15-20 in the end.
Ethan Haney led MVNU with eight goals in the game while Haynes and Lawler each added three goals. With his eight goals, Haney broke his own single season record for goals. Haney scored 57 goals last season and sits at 60 this season after his big day against the Saints. Connor Kistner had a team-high three assists and Lawler added two assists of his own. Zechariah Gee won 22 out of 32 faceoff attempts and led the Cougars with eight groundballs. Vaughan Hawkins came away with 15 saves in goal.
