Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Defiance 3-0 in Ariel Arena

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's volleyball team (8-6, 5-4 WHAC) hosted Defiance College (3-10, 2-7 WHAC) on Saturday, March 7 at Ariel Arena. 

After some back and forth scoring by both teams, the Cougars began to pull away from Defiance in the first set. Jackson Bush's kill, after an assist from Jaxson Snell, would start a five-point MVNU rally late in the first set, which would help secure the MVNU 25-14 win. 

MVNU continued the momentum of the first set into the second set. Ethan Cline had a kill, after an assist from Austin Kolaczkowski, that would start a nine-point rally, putting MVNU up 9-2. Noah Wineberg, also assisted by Kolaczkowski, would have the final kill that once again ended in an MVNU win with a score of 25-13. 

Early in the third set, Tommy Tierney's service ace put MVNU up 5-1. The Cougars did not let up and went on another five-point rally that started from a kill by Hayvin Larison, assisted by Kolaczkowski. MVNU would finish the set on top 25-15, securing the 3-0 sweep over Defiance. 

MVNU was led by Cline who came away with 10 kills and a .471 hitting percentage. Cline added six digs and two blocks. Tierney had six kills, five service aces, four digs, and one block. Larison added five kills, one assist, two digs, and four blocks. Josiah Pletcher and Wineberg each had four kills. Kolaczkowski had 15 assists, one kill, and three digs. Snell added 14 assists.  

The Cougars came away with 35 kills on a .391 hitting percentage compared to Defiance's 19 kills on a –0.051 percentage. MVNU also had 33 assists, six service aces, 28 digs, and 14 blocks. 

 

What's Next 

The Cougars will travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa to take on William Penn University on Wednesday, March 11, starting at 8:00 p.m.
